6 interior paint tips for your commercial space

12.05.16

Commercial spaces do not always have to be bland and boring. A recent University of Texas study found the color of paint you use on your walls has a direct impact on how people feel while working there and how productive they are. You also want the paint job to be perfect and polished – a professional way to present your business to clients. Use these tips to help you create that polished paint job you are looking for:

  1. Avoid lap marks: Simply roll paint across the length of the wall to the ceiling in one swipe.
  2. Use a primer to avoid a blotchy finish: Blotchiness occurs over the holes and cracks you patched with a filler or drywall compound. It is when the color is the same but the sheen is different. The porous fillers absorb the paint, dulling the surface. When light hits these dull spots, they look like blotches or mistakes. The smooth patch also stands out in contrast to the slightly bumpy texture of the rest of the wall.A quick coat of primer is all it takes to eliminate flashing and texture differences by sealing the patch so paint won’t sink in and look dull. Mix a small amount of topcoat paint into the primer for an even color throughout.
  3. Use tape: Tape along the edge of the walls to help you “color in the lines.” When the paint dries, simply cut the tape lose. This will help you paint freely and accurately.
  4. Use material drop cloths instead of plastic cloths to avoid a sticky mess. This will also prevent you from slipping and falling.
  5. Don’t paint over dirty or oily surfaces: This causes paint to easily chip or peel off. Use a heavy-duty cleaner to fill in nicks and holes and sand the surface before painting it.
  6.  Sand between each coat: Sanding between coats removes that grainy texture. Use a fine-grit sanding sponge to get into the nooks and crannies you cannot reach with normal sandpaper. This will ensure you have that smooth, professional finish you want.
