The general rule is that one gallon can of paint will cover up to 400 square feet, which is ideal for a smaller room such as a bathroom or a small study. Two cans of paint cover up to 800 square feet, which is perfect for slightly bigger rooms, such as the kitchen or living room.

• How many windows and doors? If two rooms are of the same size, but one has more windows or more doors than the other, it will require less paint overall. Measure the width and height of each window and door and subtract it from the conclusion of your calculations that you came to when measuring the walls themselves.

• How high are the ceilings? If you live in a home with very high ceilings, you will require more paint than you would for a room of the same size with lower ceilings.
